I. Basic Purpose:

Performs clerical duties in support of patient care activities. Provides front desk reception and customer service activities. Additionally, functions competently in the role of a Patient Care Technician or a Cardiac Monitor Technician

II. Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Complies with established corporate and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance methods, and safety codes. Demonstrates compliance with licensing, regulatory and accrediting agency provisions as required.

2. Consistently demonstrates appropriate and professional communication behavior toward patients, customers, and coworkers. Cooperates with Management and peers to promote an environment of teamwork and collaboration.

3. Adheres to Customer Service standards. Promotes patient and family satisfaction with hospital care and services. Ensures patient and family needs are met in a speedy fashion. Expectation of the position is that when call lights are answered at the desk, patients are addressed with their name, then staff member gives name and statement asking what can we do to help patient. Promotes customer service initiatives related to hourly rounding. Rounding should be done alternating hours with the RN. Intentional rounding should focus on the 4 P's (potty, positioning, proximity and pain). Also, utilize patient communication boards and update each shift.

4. Processes physician and nurse orders via order entry or other computer systems/modules; schedules diagnostic exams and procedures.

5. Performs clerical duties relating to patient admission, discharge and transfer.

6. Maintains patient records; ensures documents are filed appropriately.

7. Enters patient charges.

8. Coordinates front desk; ensures prompt communication of physician, nurse, patient or other customer needs; greets and direct visitors accordingly.

9. Requisitions supplies, equipment, maintenance/repair services; prepares forms as required; maintains stock and inventories.

10. Maintains department records, reports and files.

11. Maintains confidentiality of patient and unit care data.

12. Adheres to all Patient Safety standards. Promotes and maintains a safe, private, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families.

13. Ensures adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment.

14. Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.

15. Assists with orientation and training of new department staff.

16. Attends meetings as required.

17. Actively participates in unit-based quality improvement activities.

18. Maintains annual mandatory education requirements specific to position as mandated by CCMH.

19. Performs all other duties as assigned or requested.

20. Additional Patient Care Technician Duties:
* Performs basic patient care procedures, patient comfort procedures and technical procedures including thermal applications, sterile/non-sterile soaks, basic wound care, application of sterile/non-sterile dressings, setting up a sterile field, phlebotomy, EKG, and bed side glucose monitoring.
* Obtains and documents intake and output, patient vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, weight, respiration and pulse.
* Reports status of assigned activity completion, patient status changes, patient complaints or requests to the RN as indicated and periodically during the shift.
* Transports patients as directed.
* Transports specimens to designated areas; assists with ordering specimen studies as necessary.

21. Additional Cardiac Monitor Technician duties:
* Observes cardiac monitors; set alarm limits appropriately for patient safety; ensures alarms are "on" at all times.
* Records arrhythmias; reports arrhythmias promptly to RN or Charge Nurse; reports lethal arrhythmias immediately.
* Documents patient cardiac rhythms and arrhythmias per department standard; strip to be labeled per department standard.
* Maintains telemetry or hard wire units ensuring proper functioning.
* Enters telemetry charges.
* Ensures smooth shift to shift transition.

III. Minimum Requirements (experience, training, and education):

To effectively fulfill this position, candidate must meet the following requirements:

* For Health Unit Coordinator Component of Role:
> High school diploma or equivalent required;
> Current acceptable CPR certification required: American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider OR American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer;

Must successfully complete pre-employment competency testing that may include but not be limited to CCMH Health Unit Coordinator test.

* For Patient Care Technician Component of Role:
> High school diploma or equivalent required;
> Certified Nursing Assistant document and/or document/transcript demonstrating successful completion of first semester of nursing school (fundamentals of nursing or equivalent) – State of FL EMT License may be substituted for EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT only (primary source online verification required directly from State of Florida Licensing database).
> Current acceptable CPR certification required: American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider OR American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer;

Must successfully complete the didactic and clinical components of CCMH training.

* For Cardiac Monitor Technician Component of Role:
> High school diploma or equivalent required;
> Current acceptable CPR certification required: American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider OR American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer;

Must successfully complete the MMHS components of EKG interpretation.
