I was reading a fantastic article on ERE the other day about social media recruiting strategies. There are a lot of blogs and articles on this topic lately and I often share my thoughts as well. This one was especially poignant because it spoke directly to strategy. Everyone is talking about what we should do and here is a great strategy to help get us there. For me, the biggest trigger to launch into a conversation about social media with recruiters is when they mention an employee referral program. Using our best to hire the best is nothing new. Using the social media networks of our best to hire the best is. It's about transitioning the traditional mindset into new media ways of communicating, and thus recruiting top talent.

There are no experts in this arena. Those who are finding success are doing so from shared and learned experiences. Just as the article states, "From experimentation comes innovation and learning!"

Employers, recruiters, business owners....What are your thoughts? I ask because for some time now we have heard speaker after speaker share on social media and I have noticed a definite change in our community in regards to the willingness to want to get started and a lot of reservations in regards to just not being sure where and how to start. So again....From experimentation comes innovation and learning...What are you doing to experiment? Have you started by building your own online social network? This will help you get comfortable and engaged in the social media world. Talk about your experiences and share with others.  Then watch and recognize how the brainstorms will just start to flow. IS IT TRUE?

This weekend I was introduced to Byron Katie. I am so grateful and thought instantly that I had to share her with our South Florida job seekers. Byron Katie provides a process to challenge our thoughts, our beliefs, our stories if you will. For me, quite often I find myself totally engaged in my head in a conversation with someone that hasn't happened or worrying about a situation that has not even occurred or thinking about what I think of something that someone said, etc. This is human nature, yet some people get "stuck" in it and some move through it. "The Work" of Byron Katie gives a process, she provides a solution. "The Work" is to simply question our thoughts. Pretty simple, right? On the surface sure, but making it a habit is the challenging part.  I was thinking about how this could support all the job seekers in our community who are struggling to stay focused and positive and even get an interview.

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog about turning frustrations into solutions. Here is a great process to support moving out of the frustration, so for example:

Frustrated thought: "I can't get an interview!"

The Work:

Is it true?

Can you absolutely know that it's true?

How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?

Who would you be without the thought?

After we answer these questions the next step is to Turn it Around and look at it differently. There are so many "self help" type of books, speakers, and exercises out there today and it's hard to distinguish between what's valid and what isn't. All I can say is that this struck a cord with me and I invite you to check it out. Then please engage in our facebook fan page and share your experiences.

First Comes ENGAGEMENT...Then Comes RECRUITMENT!

Have you seen our Facebook Fan Page this week? Our job seeker newsletter went out on Tuesday and the lead conversation was titled, "ENGAGE IN THE PAGE!", and engage they did! We gained over 30 fans that day and a ton of local, qualified job seekers have posted comments about what they are looking for. They are also reaching out in this new media fashion and soliciting help, guidance, and feedback.

Whether or not you are currently hiring, this is such a wonderful forum to be part of so you can engage in conversations with future candidates. What seems like basic career advice to some is very hard to come by information to others. Perhaps it is as simple as sharing a story of hope in how you might know someone who has landed a job in this economy, or maybe you have recently hired and you can share something specific that the candidate you hired possessed that afforded them the opportunity to rise to the top. This simple information could help others to brainstorm and consider situations and opportunities that otherwise might not have occurred to them.

I believe in today's job market it's a good bet that we all know at least one person close to us that is unemployed and this is a great way to personally make a difference and help them by having a place full of great relevant local contributions for them to turn to. I am excited to be sharing our Fan Page with the community as a place for job seekers to engage with each other and for employers and recruiters to also chime in and share real world examples and advice.

Please take a minute and if you have not already done so, BECOME A FAN, stay engaged, join a conversation, or even start one! Over the last several months that we have been promoting our fan page  I have received a lot of great feedback from the community as job seekers and employers are grateful to have this new media forum to engage in.

GET ENGAGED IN THE PAGE!

I hear a lot from job seekers that they don't know what else to do and they feel they have done everything and are still coming up without a job. In a previous blog we discussed the importance of turning these frustrations into solutions. It's super easy to get caught up in the frustrations, but takes a truly dedicated and committed individual to not let them hold you back and instead turn it into something you can use.

To expand on this a bit more I also suggested to get engaged in our Facebook Fan page. I wanted to dive into this a bit more as I had a lot of great conversations last week in our community at Hispanic Unity's annual Diversity Career Fair and The BBLN's Annual Connections Job Fair for people with disabilities. It was great to have these conversations face-to-face with job seekers and give them the ability to become fans of our page while at the job fair. What I shared with each of them is simple, "Never before has there been a forum for job seekers to interact and talk to each other."

People reacted to this and it excited them. This is the something different everyone has been asking for. Will this absolutely get you a job quicker? I do not know.... Will this increase your opportunities? ABSOLUTELY, WITHOUT A DOUBT!

So the cheezy line I kept hearing myself say over and over again was "Get engaged in the page!" Our Facebook Fan Page is a place for you to celebrate when you get an interview, offer support to those that might be stuck in a rut, and share best practices in the job search. Give it a go, a real true effort and GET ENGAGED IN THE PAGE!

Better Position Yourself through Education

It’s ensuring that your resume makes it to the top of the stack, or that your name is on the short list of preferred candidates. Sure it starts with a good cover letter. But does it really start there? It’s having confidence in yourself and your abilities in order to convince others that you are the perfect person for that incredible job that you really want.

In order to be the best, you have to know that you’re the best, and that means you have to do your homework. That’s right, education.

There are many jobs out there but you may not have the right background. Well get it. You may be busy with a job that you don’t really want, but it pays the bills. Or you may be collecting unemployment for the time being, but that won’t last forever. Take a big tug on those bootstraps and earn the education that you need to better position yourself, professionally.

Going back to school… the idea is quite inspiring, really. But where will you find the time? You have it… you just need to carve it out of your schedule.

So here’s the drill: finish your bachelors, get your masters, differentiate yourself with a specialized certificate in an up-and-coming field like Sustainability Leadership, Software Engineering and Networking, or go global with an international business doctorate. Do your homework. Research your options. You may be surprised at the educational opportunities that exist today within our pivotal global economy.

Who Owns Your Employer Brand???

If you answered "I do" to this question I would have to ask you to take a few minutes and really, truly think about it a bit more. If you answered "bloggers, social media users, search engine managers, current employees, past employees, or vendors" then you are headed in a more accurate direction based on the fact that a fundamental shift has occurred.

I recently read a blog called Revelation- Your Employer Brand Is No Longer Owned by Your Firm on ERE that spoke specifically to this topic. While there are so many great blogs today on this and other similar ideas this one nailed it in my opinion. It shared how for those who ACTIVELY ENGAGE and PUBLISH THEIR STORY, their PERCEPTION IS REALITY. This of course touched my heart since I work for a company that works so hard to support employers to share their stories.

The blog mentioned how control provides comfort to senior talent management executives. I am sure many can relate to this. While control can be perceived as negative, I believe in this case they truly do not know better.  A fundamental shift has occurred and typically when this happens it takes time for all to "get on the bus" so to speak. Herein lies the biggest challenge of all; this shift is evolving so quickly that those who do not take a leap and engage could truly be left far, far behind. Moreover, since the reality is that we do not own our employer brands anymore if we are not engaged in this shift there is a very real possibility that the perceived perception of our brands could be the total opposite of what we intend them to be.

This shift is enabling how people learn and communicate. PEER PRODUCED CONTENT IS MORE CREDIBLE. The most common objection I hear from employers is that they are afraid to give people a platform to share negative feedback. I believe that if we think they are not finding a way to share it we are only kidding ourselves.

The great news is that with today's social media technology we have the ability to make the content we want to be most visible, BE MOST VISIBLE!

So again I ask, "Who Owns Your Employer Brand?

Turning Frustrations into SOLUTIONS!

I have had the pleasure in connecting with some great job seekers in the past several months via our facebook fan page.  Never before has there been a forum for job seekers to engage with each other in this capacity.  I have been working to help the community recognize how to maximize this new way to network in the job search. 

Many job seekers have jumped right in and I want to give BIG KUDOS to them for doing so  The idea is to get engaged, stay engaged, and build your personal brand.  Our fan page is a resource to you.  Use it to share what's going on in your job search.  Keep it focused on THE SOLUTIONS.  It is very easy to get lost in the frustrations of it all, so I challenge each and every one of you to pause a minute and when the frustration comes up, change it to a solution.  For example: 

Frustration based thought:  "I can't get an interview and I have applied to a ton of jobs and I know I am qualified!"

Solution based thought:  "I am going to search LinkedIn and see if anyone I know is connected to someone at the companies I am applying to and ask for an introduction.  After that I am going to pick the top 5 jobs I am truly qualified for and send a hand written card"

The competition is fierce.  Here is a scenario I would like for you to visualize:

You are running in a race.  The finish line is the hiring line.  Whoever gets there first gets the job.  Every time you give energy to a frustrated thought you are putting the breaks on and allowing others to pass you. In a race that is already so difficult you are literally making it worse for yourself.

Would you ever in a real race just stop and let others pass you by?

Usually in a race the focused ones who are determined to win are in sync with each other and feeding off of each others drive.  They are typically neck and neck and look like they are running in a pack.  If you look behind them in the distance you will see the stragglers.  They are singled out, one here; one there.  They are not surrounded by anything or anyone to drive them.  They are not engaged.  They are just left behind.

So, where are you in the job search race?  I would imagine many of you are doing a dance where some days you are of the solution based thought and are part of the flow of focused driven runners and other days you might fall behind with the stragglers stuck in the frustration based thought.

Frustration leads to more frustration and gives your competitors a FREE push toward the hiring line.  Be part of the solution and push YOURSELF toward the hiring line.  Use our fan page to engage with each other.  Share solutions, ideas, thoughts, etc.  If you are stuck in the frustration, THAN SAY SO, except refrain from sharing the frustration specifically and instead say where you are and ask for support.  Solicit help from each other in finding a solution.  Engage in your co-job seekers and find out what is working for them.

If you are one who gets an interview, please TELL US!  This will give hope to others.  Keep us updated on the process so as a community we can learn and grow!

HRABC Annual Conference = A HUGE SUCCESS!

Last week we spent the day at HRABC's 3rd annual conference, Revealing the New World of HR...also known as #hrabc09 in social media lingo. I am honored to have seen this conference grow from the inception back in 2007. Since then it has truly doubled in size year after year and the incredible conference team lead by President-elect Kia-lee Bussey, SPHR and Past-President Barbara Flynn, SPHR make it look seamless. Events of this caliber do not happen over night and I want to give huge kudos to the entire conference team for putting on another fantastic local HR conference.

Generating Real World Engagement!

This week I had the pleasure of hearing Deborah Herman speak on Interactive Best Practices and Recruitment at the SMA South Florida meeting. I have noticed recruiters go from hearing about social meeting to being ready to get their feet wet a bit. With that said, I am also noticing reservations because people are just unsure how to engage and measure their ROI.

Personally, I do not do anything unless I see value and feel good about my ROI opportunities, so I can completely relate. I was just reading an article called Recruitment Social Media ROI. It shared how it's really all about the people for social media recruiting to be effective. Recruiters need to be engaged and driving conversations.

Having a lot of fans on a facebook fan page is great, but having recruiters and fans engaged in conversations is effective. How do we measure the ROI? This is a forever evolving answer as effective social media is a result of learned and shared experience. The goal remains the same: to get hires. Social media is a phenomenal tool to get to the goal. The idea is to facilitate and generate real world engagement, as stated so beautifully by a comment on this article.

We have had great success this week on our facebook fan page. Job seekers are engaged and leaving comments. They are chatting with each other. Never before has their been a forum for job seekers to engage with each other. As a recruiter this is an incredible opportunity to join in the conversation and comment back directly to the job seekers. Do what you do best: ATTRACT AND FIND TALENT!

Our mission is and always has been to connect local job seekers and local employers. I encourage you to take advantage of the network we have built and continue to build.

Facebook Job Searching Tips

I believe many people recognize there is tremendous value in using Facebook and other social networking sites in their job search and also don't quite know exactly how to realize this. What I mean is that it is all still so new and constantly evolving. If we keep the conversation going, share what works and what does not, than more people can hopefully find success and get back to work.

With that said, I just read an article on about.com and learned about something I had not thought of. The best part is that it's simple and easy, which are my two favorite combinations. It was about adding notes.  Basically the article shared how notes stay on a person's page longer than a status update, so having an updated note with your employment status and what you are looking for could be very beneficial.

Social Media-Not Just A New Media, A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WORLD!

This line stuck out to me in a blog I was reading called Why you have to engage in social media even if you don't want to. We've been blogging on Jobing since January of 07 and recruiters looked at us like we were nuts. Since then I have paid close attention to the level of engagement people have in regards to social media. I have noticed it go from not interested, to interested yet apprehensive, to willing to maybe poke a round a bit, and in some rare and highly effective cases I have seen people dive in head first and benefit tremendously from it.

This article was great. It shared how back in the late 1990's there came a time where if a business did not have a website they were invisible. Point blank, we as a society realized that if we wanted to learn more about a company and they did not have a website we were done with them and off to one that did; today not much has changed. It's the same pattern emerging, but just in a different way. Having a website is just the beginning, but a new website is still invisible. Having a website and just simple "advertising" is no longer cutting it. Effective social media truly is the only way to go.

Another blog I came across from the same blogger, a smart bear, that I thought was a hoot and really gets the point across was If Kindergarten were like Social Media Marketing. A definite must read!

5 Ways to Use The Jobing.com Fan Page in Your Job Search!

I was thinking about how we can organically continue to build up our fans on our facebook fan page. The goal is to have community engagement. I believe if our fans see value in the page they will tell their friends and so forth and so on.  Job seekers have an amazing opportunity to connect with each other and local employers in a way never before possible.  Here's how:

5 ways to use the Jobing.com Fan page in your job search:

  1. Network via our fan page! Get connected with who we are connected with.  This is a tremendous opportunity for any job seeker!  Remember not just job seekers are fans of Jobing.com South Florida. Your next employer could be commenting on the same post that you are. Local professional associations and career coaches are our fans too!
  2. Our fan page is a resource to you! Our jobs are fed into the page, often local events will be highlighted, employment and job seeking blog links are shared, community organizations and associations are engaged too, etc.
  3. Participate and get engaged with the page!  Comment on posts, answer questions that might arise, share your brand on our fan page. Here is your chance to ask questions you might have pertaining to your job search. It could be answered by our community or perhaps your next employer!
  4. Be a voice in the community!  Everyone is looking for positive information.  The Jobing.com South Florida fan page is for the community, so I challenge you to take ownership, share your brand, and empower others to do the same. 
  5. Be yourself and be honest!  Remember we are representing ourselves when we  post on the fan pages.  Your next employer could be reading your post.  Be consistent in the message and brand you are representing.

BECOME A FAN OF JOBING.COM SOUTH FLORIDA ON FACEBOOK!

The Facebook fan pages are a great opportunity to continue our efforts in connecting local job seekers with local employers.  All of our jobs are also available on our fan page and in the coming months many of our local employers will also have their jobs on their fan pages as well via our new career app.  This social media world we are living in is truly evolving by the minute.  So....if you are on Facebook please head over and become a fan of Jobing.com South Florida.  Once you do please then follow these simple steps to suggest us to everyone in your network and watch our network grow, which is of course how we will continue connecting job seekers and employers!

HR Florida 2009...A GREAT SUCCESS!

Congratulations to Carol McDaniel, her 2009 Conference Team, and a whole list of volunteers for hosting yet another successful state conference.  This year a total of 14.75 recertification credits provided another huge return on investment for certified professionals.

Social media was front and center this year; a Twitter stream provided information about what was taking place.  “Blogging & HR: Can the two peacefully coexist?” was the topic for a panel about blogging and its impact on organizations and the HR profession.  HR Florida Tweet-up was THE race horse ride on Monday night in the lobby bar of the hotel. 

Thank you to all the attendees that stopped by the Jobing.com booth in the expo hall to discuss why we’re much more than just a job board!  We were excited with how many folks were anxious to become a Fan of Jobing on Facebook and follow us on Twitter!
