Blog Post: Reality TV Career Tips

posted Tuesday, February 5, 2008 2:00 AM

It may be the writer’s strike or the economy – who knows? However, more often than not, reality TV programs are all over broadcast media. Of course, I can’t help but analyze their contribution to career development or may I say their “new takes” on career choices.  I love to see how reality shows add a bit of drama, excitement and validation to some careers that previously were just looked at as jobs. Nevertheless, it is an interesting way to give our youth another insider’s perspective to career choices.

The Wedding Consultant
The stress of the bride is rivaled by the stress of the wedding consultant.  These ladies are challenged to make dreams come true by helping the bride to-be find that perfect dress. As a sales consultant, the pressure of reaching sales goals does have an impact on the customer service and the ability to truly connect with the client.  Needless to say, those who quickly establish rapport with their clients, ask the right questions to better assess the client needs and have a thorough knowledge of the inventory, will always succeed in this field.

Hell’s Kitchen or Top Chef Chef Ramsey may seem ruthless to some. However, the glamour of being the Top Chef does require a lot of work. Contestants are challenged to test their teamwork abilities, how well can they follow-instructions, and how well do they communicate with their team.  Multi-tasking is a second nature to those directing the work of the kitchen crew, and every single person plays a key role to make that restaurant succeed.

Make Me A Supermodel I must confess, this is not necessarily in the top list of growing industries or career.  However, it does take a special person to succeed in this field. Another interesting take on the making of models is the Dickinson Modeling Agency.  Being camera-friendly is just one aspect of the business.  The prospect model needs to be an actor, demonstrate self-confidence, stamina and be ready to jump into attires, poses or situations that may not be their cup-of-tea.  Temptations and excesses abound in this industry. After countless of auditions, rejections, diets, and criticisms, those who manage to secure a “super model” status will enjoy a phenomenally wealthy career (while on the top).

American Idol A star is born every season. These young people are really put through the test – performing in front of large audiences, totally remaking their image, exploring different genre and even a little dancing here and there. Besides their drive to succeed, potential idols need to meet the basic requirement that make a performer marketable – talent, looks and charisma.

Project Runway Behind a great model, there is a fabulous designer, and this reality show explores the makings of a great designer. Basic ingredients you may ask – creative flair, understanding of fabrics, textures and color, and most important of all, understanding the needs of the clients (body type and requests).

My old time favorite was “ Quincy , M.E. ”, a 1970’s prelude to “CIS.”  The character’s inquisitive mind, sense of humor and nonchalant manner always helped him find the culprits behind the crime. From this experience, I actually volunteered to work at the Medical Examiner’s Office while in high school.  Needless to say, I quickly learned that there was much more than a good sense of humor to become a medical examiner.  Whatever your career aspiration is, find someone working in that field and get to know the ins and outs before you make that move. Best of success!
