Blog Post: Showing Up For The Interview

posted Tuesday, December 4, 2007 2:00 AM

I was recently reading an article about job seekers that don't show up for their interviews.  I began to think about why candidates are no shows.  The job seeker goes through with applying for the job and generally a phone interview or at least a brief discussion to set up the interview.  Then I though of using this forum to get some feedback from you; the job seekers and recruiters to discuss the topic.

Have you ever been a no show for an interview?  Why did you decide not to show up?

Are you a recruiter that has had no shows?  What do you do with these types of candidates?

With a tight job market and low unemployment rate is there an increase in no shows or has society changed so much that people are starting to ignore their responsibilities?  A simple phone call or email to cancel an interview is easy and the responsible thing to do.

I say never burn any bridges.  HR Recruiters sometimes move from company to company and they may remember that name and resume that wasted their time.  I once had an area manager that I worked for at one company, several years later I was working at another company when they hired a new manager, this is the same person and I was again reporting to them.

Please tell me your thoughts and lets get a dialogue going on this issue.

I have never had a no show for an interview; however, if I did, I would check with the candidate to make certain we had the correct place and time. I would assess their response to decide if another date for the interview would be appropriate.

I am dismayed about the lack of interviewing skills, job search etiquette, and no follow up by candidate.

Toby,

Thank you for your response. What are you seeing with candidates interview skills, job search etiquette and follow up?

As an expert in the community what advice can you provide?

Andrew,
I too have heard that a great deal of South Florida job seekers simply don't show up! These "no-shows" have missed the most important area every job seeker should master, Networking 101. This is the moment when you sell yourself to an employer and more importantly a HR professional in the community.

I am a job seeker and I believe that it is a matter of responsibility and good manners. You cannot have people waiting for you without them being aware that you cannot make it. So far I have had to call as I was stuck in traffic once and made it to the interview some 30 minutes late.

I have never been a No-Show to an interview. That is just not a good first impression (As if not showing up for an interview even gets you a second chance.) However, I was late for an interview and I called earlier than the appointment time and got directions..(The directions I had been given were confusing).

I am a professional job hunter (if you want to call me overqualified with BA and AAS degrees from NY) with no job prospects. Because I am an older person with no job prospects I have not gone to certain companies that I know I will not be fairly judged. I know from the phone conversation what is going on. How about going on time and be kept waiting - how rude? Some of these Floridian companies do a cattle call and make many appointments at the same - to make sure if one does not show then another poor soul would show up. How about when they ask me if I have any kids? How about when they ask you over the phone when you graduated college? Those, of course, are very very discriminatory questions. I have seen over and over the same things happen to me. I have also seen very bad punctuation/grammar in the Spanish language in a recent job. They even had a poster board put up on the wall....What can I say they deserve the dumb employees they have in the company. If I sound too angry that is too bad for anybody in HR. I have gone to an interview that I felt I was in a police station from the questioning. Maybe one day I will get a job which is in "Neverland" - yea that is too bad if people don't show because they are just as rude as the applicants!!!!!! It comes back at them!!!!!

In this day and age, with the economy being so poor, I cannot imagine anyone not showing up for a scheduled interview. I can see human error in the time/date yet, to not show up at all. The company spends money and time putting forth their effort. If one does not want the job, be honest with the employer so they are able to move forward. This is simply professional etiquette. As for those that engage in this behavior, they probably remain on the unemployment line for a significant period of time.

I have enjoyed the feedback and would like to keep this topic going. We can all learn from one another utilizing a forum like this. Keep the blog going!!!

I can't believe that people would not show up for a scheduled interview!!! Especially in today's generation with all the possible forms of communications. I think its common courtesy to contact anyone with any kind of cancellations. Really, what better reason then being hit by a bus?? lol It really disappoints me to know that there are people out there without that much responsiblity, who would not show up to an interview. It waistes the recruiters time and it also holds back the person who would of actually showed up to the interview.
These our the people who will affect our future, I really feel sorry for us :(

Not showing up for an interview is not only disrespectful, it's completely rude. But what about the employers who don't have the decency to let an applicant know whether he/she is a fit for the company? They let you hang on for days wondering if you will be hired or not. When you call to check on your hire status you are told management is unavailable and they will be given the message you called. Consideration works both ways and apparently both sides need work in this department.

I haven't met anybody with a NO SHOW interview, I think people are desperately looking for a job since we are living in a bad economy with high rate of unemployment. I believe that most of the jobs opening posted on career services are fake and they don't exist. It is part of a game plan.
For instance, take me for example, I've been looking for work for almost a year, I have sent resumes to many employers and I have not been offered an interview, not even an e-mail from the employers thanking me for applying, but the position has been filled. I qualify for the jobs that I apply for. I'm a recent graduate with an Electrical Engineering degree and I have many years of experience in office work. So, for the companies who say that people don't show for interviews, that is B.S, job-seekers don't show for interviews because they don't have one to go to.

FYI - there are job seekers who do not show up for interviews. In the past week two different job seekers have been No Shows. I can't figure out why. If you're not interested after initially accepting the interview why not just call back and let the company know you are not coming. It's not like the job market is great, I just don't understand this.
